What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index), also known as bodymass, is a numerical value calculated from your height and weight. It is the most widely used screening tool to categorize individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
The BMI formula (Quetelet Index) is simple: weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. For imperial units: [weight (lbs) / height (in)^2] x 703. Our body mass index calculator handles both metric and imperial calculations automatically.
Whether you need a BMI calculator for women, BMI calculator for men, a BMI calculator by age, or an IMC calculator, our tool provides comprehensive results including your BMI category, ideal weight range, estimated body fat percentage, and a visual BMI scale.
Underweight
May indicate insufficient nutrition.
Normal
Lowest risk of weight-related issues.
Overweight
Increased health risk. Consider lifestyle changes.
Obese
Significantly increased health risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

BMI (Body Mass Index), also known as bodymass or body weight index, is a numerical value calculated from your height and weight using the BMI formula: weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. It is used as a screening tool to categorize individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
The BMI formula (also known as the Quetelet Index) is: BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]^2. For imperial units: BMI = [weight (lbs) / height (in)^2] x 703.
According to the WHO, a healthy BMI range for adults is 18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30.0 or above is obese.
The BMI chart for women uses the same WHO categories. However, women naturally have more body fat than men at the same BMI, so some experts suggest a healthy BMI for women may be slightly higher (20-25).
The BMI chart for men follows WHO standards. Men typically have more muscle mass than women, which can result in a higher BMI even with low body fat. Athletes may have a high BMI without being overweight.
Your ideal weight for height corresponds to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. For example, if you are 170 cm tall, your ideal weight range is approximately 53.5 kg to 72.3 kg.
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may be classified as overweight. It should be used alongside other health indicators like waist circumference and body fat percentage.
An overweight BMI is 25.0 to 29.9, while an obese BMI is 30.0 or higher. Obesity is further classified into Class I (30.0-34.9), Class II (35.0-39.9), and Class III (40.0+).
For children and teens (ages 2-19), BMI is interpreted using age and gender-specific percentiles. For older adults (65+), a slightly higher BMI (25-27) may be associated with better health outcomes.
IMC (Indice de Masa Corporal) is the Spanish and French term for BMI. They are exactly the same calculation and use the same categories.
Calculate your BMI regularly and track how it changes as you lose weight. Set a target BMI in the normal range (18.5-24.9) and work toward it.
A normal BMI for both women and men is 18.5 to 24.9. However, a healthy BMI for women may be slightly higher (20-25) while for men it may be slightly lower (19-24).
Most bariatric surgery programs require a BMI of 40 or higher, or a BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health conditions.
For adults: Body Fat % = (1.20 x BMI) + (0.23 x Age) - (10.8 x Gender) - 5.4, where Gender is 1 for men and 0 for women.
The Army BMI calculator uses the same BMI formula but may have different standards for acceptable BMI ranges. Military BMI standards often include additional measurements like neck and waist circumference.
